Jason Morris

A COLLECTION OF WORDS

Jason Morris is an accomplished singer, songwriter, drummer, clarinetist and guitar player from Brisbane Australia. At the tender age of three Jas began playing drums under the tuition of his father, this was just the beginning for Jason. As his seventh birthday rolled around, he began to learn Clarinet and musical theory from his grandfather, renowned jazz musician and owner of the Australian Academy of Music, John Morris SNR. Before the age of 12 Jason had completed his AMEB grade 6 in clarinet. At this stage of his life the young drummer joined his first band and performed in many venues around Brisbane including the now demolished Festival Hall.

As Jason progressed through high school a normal teenage job, working at McDonalds would not sufis, so he formed a hugely successful covers band in Brisbane. The band was still so young, they would have to be driven to gigs three to four nights a week by their parents, and sit outside the venues during breaks. Mr Internationals stayed together for four years before disassembling. The band had travelled as far north as Airlie Beach and as far south as Sydney playing in almost every resort and covers venue in between. During this time Jas began to learn guitar from his fellow band mates and hone his song writing abilities.

In 2006 Jas and his band got the opportunity to record an EP in Sydney under the production of Daniel Johns (Savage Garden) and Jamie Sullivan a well known producer. This was the start of a break off band from Mr Internationals called Machinery Hill who would later support the likes of The Potbelleez, Daryl Braithwaite, Eskimo Joe, and play at the Caloundra Music Festival alone side acts like Empire of the Sun. It was through Machinery Hill that Jason was truly able to start to explore his song writing and arranging skills and has learnt off some of Australia’s best including Jamie Sullivan, Scott Aplin (MD for The Voice AU) and many other of Australia’s finest producers.

In 2010 Jason began to play session drums in many studios around Brisbane, from Hip Hop to Folk tunes he has done it all and gained a lot of praise from drum companies all over the world. He now plays in a successful Brisbane band called Hushka that has supported some of the worlds biggest acts, and travels the world playing his solo and duo material both original and covers. Jason has close relationships with most drum companies including DW and C&C drums and has earnt an excellent reputation as a guitarist and singer. It is his broad knowledge of music that has gained Jas so much respect as an all round musician, and his ability to transfer his knowledge to most main instruments that helps him sit in with musicians all around the world.

Today you can find Jason doing any number of things as he continues to add to his musical journey. He recently hiked to base camp of Mt Everest just to record a song there... He has played with Buddist monks, sung with locals in Thailand, Nepal, Vietnam, and Malaysia and continues to grow his knowledge of world music. “It is important to keep learning when you are a musician, so that you can bring your audience the very best performance each time you take the stage”.
